The Project - Formulato - 3rd Edition
Message from the Project Leader
This project was developed through cooperation between the family Rosas López, and myself, Santiago Martinez Bringas. It all started when I received an invitation from a new friend to spend a weekend at a rural ranch in the Delegation of Santiago. Twenty-six years ago, when I first came to Baja California Sur, I had the opportunity to visit the town of Santiago, a wonderful and enigmatic place where significant events occurred in the Regional History of the Baja California Peninsula. This fascination continued, when I laid my hands on a book by the Jesuit missionary Miguel del Barco: "Natural History and the Ancient California Chronicle; Additions and Corrections".Circumstances led me to the sub-delegation of San Dionisio, where, a friendly and charismatic family opened their homes and trust to me as I was plunged into an overwhelming and harsh reality. I encountered rural life, and came to recognize the skills and difficulties of this population, so isolated yet so strong becouse of their ingenious abilitiy, sense of rootedness, and abilities to persevere, resist, protect, and disseminate environmental knowledge.
Thus, with some government support by the Program to support the Cultural Municipalities and Communities (PACMYC) our 1st Edition, and through the Council National for the Culture by Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) Programa de Fomento a Proyectos y Coinversiones Culturales 2nd and CURRENT 3rd Edition. I made a public call for artists and by invitation, and finally created a catalogue- magazine that is a collection of expressions by the artists based on their experiences, rural ranch workshops and interpretations of ranch life.
This project aims to assist in the preservation and promotion not only of the cultural aspect of life in isolated rural ranches in Baja Peninsula California Cabo, Mexico, but also the preservation of the land through the promotion of responsible eco-cultural-alternative tourist activities which these communities offer.
Original art pieces will be won by auction. These catalogue-magazines will be sold and will be available at various venues.
Part of the funds raised will go back to the community after offsetting the cost of production, promotion, and other expenses. The balance will be placed in a fund to assist the collective with start up for future cultural projects.
A portion of the art books will also be donated to schools, libraries, public galleries and domains. These books will be donated publicly to raise awareness and understanding about these Original Californians among both locals and tourists.
We appreciate your support and interest in the project. We are grateful to all those who have contributed so far. It is our personal wish that this is just the beginning of this creative process fostering long term preservation of the community, the land and creativity. We are interested in developing international relations with artists and other ranch communites around the world.
